Children of Blood and Bone

Children of Blood and BoneA Quick Review of Children of Blood and Bone

You should read Children of Blood and Bone. This is a fantasy novel that takes place in Western Africa. You will be taken through a journey to bring magic back to the land of Orisha. The main character, Zelie and her brother, Tzain, lost their mother in the tragic raid of the maji. This is also when magic disappeared from their land and the beginning of horrible treatment of diviners.

One day Zelie gets connected with Amari, who is the daughter of the king who ordered the killing of all maji. Amari has also witnessed the brutal killing of a diviner, so out of hurt and anger, she decides to do something about it.

Together these three decide to go on a journey to bring magic back. However, this journey isn’t an easy one. The king and his son, Inan, are determined to win this battle.

This story is a page turner as it moves quickly with lots of action. It also has well developed characters that have interesting relationships with each other. There are many internal and external conflicts the characters deal with as the story progresses. You won’t be able to predict how things turn out. I actually can’t wait to read the sequel.

Some Real Life Lessons from Children of Blood and Bone

Children of Blood and Bone was birthed during a time when the author was grieving the deaths of innocent children and unarmed men and women murdered at the hands of the police. She aimed to tell a story of overcoming situations that seem to be out of our control. While this is a fantasy novel, it still includes complex issues such as social injustice and abuse of power. While you’re rooting for the heroine of the story, you should also root for those who have suffered injustices in real life.

This story also reminds me of the importance of fighting for your gifts. People won’t always respect what gifts you bring to the world, but it’s your job to not let them take it from you. It’s easy for others to fear the power of your gifts, and as a result, they’ll try to take it away. Always, always, fight for your gifts!

There’s so much to this book. The characters, the setting, the story line.. I’m sure you’ll love it!
