Little Leaders by Vashti Harrison tells the stories of women who have greatly impacted American history. From slaves to women who are still currently making big moves, their stories are just what students need exposure to. The women in this book include authors, advocates, lawyers, journalists, educators, artists, athletes, politicians, scientists, and many, many more. There are some names that are familiar and some that aren’t so familiar; nevertheless, their stories teach us some very important lessons.

Leaders are risk takers!

These women took many risks in order to fulfill all these achievements. From being a spy during the Civil War to filing court cases against slave owners to applying to all white schools, to fighting racism, discrimination and segregation, these women were fighters. They weren’t afraid of going against the norm and working for what they believed in. They took risks despite the negative consequences that may have followed. Their fearless steps shows us how to take risks today.

Leaders believe in themselves!

Many of the women in the book were the first to accomplish something. In a time where women, especially black women, were seen as inferior, these women believed in themselves and rose to the occasion. The odds weren’t in their favor, but their passion, persistence and grit paved the way to their success.

Leaders serve and give back!

Not only did these women pave the way for women after them, they also found ways to give back and support the communities from which they came. Many of them took lead roles in fighting for equality for all Americans while others started organizations for others to follow in their footsteps. This is a reminder to never forget where you come from and to always find ways to give back and help those who will come after you.

Little Leaders provides the much needed motivation and inspiration for young people today. We are all on a journey of fulfilling our purpose in this world and taking a moment to remember the leaders that came before us is so very important. Little Leaders is an amazing book that serves as a source of encouragement for the next generation of leaders.
